Metasequoia Glyptostroboides Gold Rush

Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Ogon' is commonly known by the trade name Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Gold Rush'. It is a fast-growing selection of dawn redwood with pleasing bright yellow feathery foliage that will turn tawny brown before being shed in the fall. This is a deciduous conifer. And among Redwoods, the Gold Rush Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Gold Rush') is often considered the most highly sought-after. With a quick-growing nature and glowing gold foliage, it's easy to understand why. The Gold Rush Dawn Redwood towers above other trees, often putting on up to twenty-four inches in one year. Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Gold Rush' is less vigorous than the species and grows to be a handsome tree with a narrow, conical habit, ideal for larger gardens or woodland. It performs best in full sun and moist soil, although is quite tolerant of most situations. Known as the dawn redwood due its ancient lineage, it displays bright yellow fern like summer foliage turning russet and orange. Around 1993 Dutch horticulturist Peter Zweinburg of Boskoop, Holland obtained it and brought it into Europe for distribution under the name ‘Gold Rush’ ('Goldrush'). By rights, it should probably be listed as Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Ogon' GOLD RUSH to preserve its original cultivar name. METASEQUOIA GLYPTOSTROBOIDES GOLDRUSH – Golden Dawn Redwood Characteristics Goldrush is a golden-yellow leaved cultivar of the Dawn Redwood, discovered in Japan as a seedling. The Dawn Redwood has the familiar conical coniferous shape, with sparse upward sweeping branches giving the tree a narrow form. The leaves which are short, broad needles, could be mistaken for those of the Yew.

Landscape Attributes

Gold Rush Dawn Redwood is an open deciduous tree with a strong central leader and a distinctive and refined pyramidal form. It lends an extremely fine and delicate texture to the landscape composition which can make it a great accent feature on this basis alone.

This is a relatively low maintenance tree, and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. Deer don't particularly care for this plant and will usually leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Gold Rush Dawn Redwood is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Accent
  • Shade
  • Vertical Accent

Planting & Growing

Metasequoia Glyptostroboides Gold Rush

Gold Rush Dawn Redwood will grow to be about 50 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 25 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 4 feet from the ground, and should not be planted underneath power lines. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live to a ripe old age of 100 years or more; think of this as a heritage tree for future generations!

This tree should only be grown in full sunlight. It is quite adaptable, prefering to grow in average to wet conditions, and will even tolerate some standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates. This is a selected variety of a species not originally from North America.

Intense, golden yellow, feathery foliage makes this striking, new cultivar easily recognizable. Metasequoia glyptostroboides ‘Gold Rush’ is deciduous and has the same handsome habit and horizontal branches as the species. Full sun produces best color, though partial shade is recommended in warmer summer climates. Known in Japan as ‘Ogon’, the tree was renamed by Dutch nurseryman Pieter Zwijnenburg Jr. before its introduction into European markets in 1993.
